Exchange Central

Central Michigan District Health Department

Syringe Service Programs are community-based programs that provide key pathways to services to prevent drug use, HIV, and viral hepatitis. Those who inject drugs are at high risk of contracting HIV and Hepatitis C due to risky practices like sharing used syringes. The purpose of syringe service programs are to prevent the transmission of HIV and other blood-borne viruses, such as Hepatitis C, and to link injection drug users to vital prevention programs, medical care, and mental health services. Based on the HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs in Scott County, Indiana, 220 other counties were identified by the CDC who were at high risk of HIV and HCV outbreaks related to opioid injection. Out of the 220 counties in the U.S., 10 were in Michigan, and 2 of the 10 were in our district; the two counties identified were Clare and Roscommon. With this identified, a need was determined for a syringe service program in areas that Central Michigan District Health Department serve. Health Promotions recently started a program and named it Exchange Central, which is operated out of our Clare county branch office in Harrison. Exchange Central offers a judgement free location for residents from ALL counties to receive clean syringes and works and dispose of used ones, free of charge. Participants of the program may receive syringe packets even if they don’t bring in used ones, but we encourage that they bring them in to be disposed of properly. We also have other resources available to participants utilizing Exchange Central. During a visit to Exchange Central, participants also have access to: HIV/STI Testing Naloxone with Education Vaccinations Safe Sex Kits Education Safer Injection HIV/STI’s Vein Care Viral Hepatitis Referrals Treatment Mental Health Services HIV/PrEP Insurance
