GoodWorks: North AL Harm Reduction

GoodWorks: North AL Harm Reduction  |  Huntsville, AL

Overview

It is our mission to protect the health, dignity, and free will of individuals who use drugs as well as the people and communities around them by bridging barriers to care and facilitating individual practices which preserve public health and safety through our outreach and education services.

Goodworks employs a stigma-free, holistic approach to improving public health and safety by utilizing community outreach and education. We hope that by providing people with education regarding the prevention of STIs and other preventable medical problems prevalent among people who use drugs and providing access to means of increased personal safety, individuals will be empowered and inspired to improve their personal outcomes using their methods of choice.

We also function as a community resource hub, bridging barriers to accessing care through person-centered linkage to care, along with encouragement and guidance for people who wish to access our region’s network of local social assistance agencies.

Anyone seeking care can utilize any and all elements of our program within reason, including employment and/or community advisory board opportunities within the organization, should they become available.

All community members are welcome and encouraged to take advantage of GoodWorks’ services regardless of income, housing status, drug use, race, religious affiliation, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

Harm reduction efforts are associated with reducing the impacts of drug use in communities in several ways, including but not limited to: decreasing rates of fatal overdose, decreasing rates of transmission for STIs and blood-borne pathogens like HIV and Hepatitis C diagnoses and reducing reports of criminal activity in the areas being served.

We strongly believe that through these efforts and the expansion of our programs and scope of practice, we will create positive changes that will be felt in many ways, and for generations to come, not only in Huntsville but throughout Alabama, the Southeast, and Southern Appalachia.
