Proyecto SEP

Migrant Health Center, Western Region, Inc.  |  Mayaguez, PR

Overview

Migrant Health Center, Western Region, Inc. (MIGRANT) is a 330(g)(e)(h), 501(c)(3) non-profit community-based organization with 15 primary health clinics located within 10 municipalities in the western region of Puerto Rico. MIGRANT has a Special Projects Division, which serves a variety of marginalized and disadvantaged populations with specific services according to the needs identified within each population. Within this division is the SEP Project, which exchanges used syringes for new syringes for the population of People Who Inject Drugs (PQID) in its facilities. This serves a harm reduction strategy aimed to prevent HIV and Hepatitis C infections. Syringe disinfection kits are also distributed. In Puerto Rico, the population of PWID is the third population at highest risk for becoming infected with HIV. Among all the Americas, Puerto Rico represents the highest incidence of Hepatitis C. According to the CDC, the act of sharing syringes is the second most infectious route of transmission and drastically increases the chances of contracting HIV and/or Hepatitis C. Taking into consideration that not all people have the means to reach the Project's facilities and the lack of these services in other municipalities, the Project carries out community outreach activities with syringe exchange in the following municipalities: Aguadilla, San Sebastian, Añasco, Mayagüez, San German, Peñuelas, Guayanilla, Yauco, and Sabana Grande.
