Overview
The Thurston County Public Health and Social Services Syringe Services Program (SSP) provides a way for people who inject drugs (PWIDs) who continue to inject to safely dispose of used syringes and to obtain sterile syringes at no cost. The department SSP provides a range of related prevention and care services that are vital to helping PWIDs reduce their risks of acquiring and transmitting blood-borne infections as well as maintain and improve their overall health. The Syringe Services Program offers an exchange of syringes at offsite locations in an effort to stop the spread of HIV and Hepatitis. - Condom distribution to prevent sexual transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). - Referrals to substance abuse treatment and other medical and social services. - Overdose response training and naloxone administration training. Injectable (vial and syringes) naloxone is provided. Nasal Narcan spray may be obtained at most pharmacies. - Medicaid and most commercial health insurance plans cover at least one form of Narcan.
